3 Life Lessons for the Young and the Young at Heart
My novel, Quest for the Enlightened Pilgrim, is packed with lessons that I learned—life lessons earned walking the Camino, studying the Master Key System, or listening to wise friends.

My main character is a young woman, 23 years old when she first walks the Camino. I was 58 years old when I first walked, but I walked with my daughter who was 25 at the time.
I would say that Lucy, the hero of the story, is a little bit me, a little bit my daughter, and more than half imaginary. I hope that young adults as well readers of all ages can identify with her.
Perhaps you can enjoy some of the life lessons Lucy learns while walking. Here are just a few. I might share more later.
Lesson 1: Our Thoughts Create our Reality.
This is a foundational lesson from The Master Key System by Charles Haanel. Once you accept that you are, indeed, the creator of your own life, then you understand how you got to the present moment. Then, you can take responsibility and be in control going forward. You become the architect of your life.
When the creative power of thought is fully understood, its effect will be seen to be marvelous… The student who learns that power comes from within, that he is weak only because he has depended on help from outside, and who unhesitatingly throws himself on his own thought, instantly rights himself, stands erect, assumes a dominant attitude, and works miracles. — Charles Haanel, Master Key System, Intro
Lesson 2: The Law of Growth
Once you understand Lesson 1, you realize that what you think about expands. This is the Law of Growth. When you focus on the negative, you get more negative results in your life. However, when you focus on love, kindness and gratitude—more positive results appear.
Even being grateful for small things can start to change your perspective. On the Camino, where you are living more simply, it is easy to be grateful for a hot shower or a lower bunk. Or any bed, for that matter.
In the book, Lucy meets Henrik, after they both encounter health challenges. Here’s what Henrik says about gratitude:
"Always be grateful, even when it is difficult. There may be a lesson or a hidden reward that comes later. Meeting you has been a gift."
“I have a challenge for you, Lucy. One practice I have done for many years is to record, every day, my gratitude for three or more things. Did you know that what you think about grows, Lucy? When you think about what you are grateful for, more cause for gratitude appears. It is like inviting abundance into your life. Come on in, abundance, I am grateful!”
Lesson 3: Words Matter
Sometimes we think we are being positive, yet our words do not fit. Maybe we say things like ‘no worries’ or ‘no problem’ when we really mean ‘it’s all good.’ Your mind catches the words ‘worries and ‘problem’ and what do you think that the law of growth brings?
Change your words. Instead of saying ‘I’m anxious to do’ whatever—say ‘I’m excited to do that.’ After all, would you like more anxiety in your life, or more excitement?
During the Master Key Experience, we read The Greatest Salesman in the World, by Og Mandino. This is a powerful book, full of wisdom. We are encouraged to read each Scroll three times daily for one month. Then halfway through the month, eliminate the word ‘will’ and the message becomes even more powerful!
Using the word ‘will’ puts everything in the future, where anything might happen. Yet creation happens in the present. Live right now the way you want to become, and guess what? That reality begins to manifest. Affirmations made in the present tense are always more powerful!
